OCR: moon earth sun Demonstrate In many areas, including the study of the moon, Leonardo's knowledge was incomplete. Because most ancient texts had not been translated into Italian, he often entered contemporary debates without full knowledge of earlier theories. Prevailing theory held that the moon receives light directly from the sun and also absorbs the sun's light into its body, which is transparent. This was thought to explain why the crescent moon on a clear night shows a dim light on the three- quarters not directly illuminated by the sun. But Leonardo theorizes that the moon receives light only as it is reflected from the earth's waters: "This brightness at such a time [is] derived from our ocean and the other inland seas." (2r)
